Description
The Natchitoches are a Native American tribe from Louisiana and Texas. They organized themselves along with the Hasinai, and Kadohadacho (at the borders of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana). Natchitoches territory was along the Red River of the South in northeastern Texas and northwestern Louisiana, they were important allies of the French in the 17th and 18th centuries, played a major role in the subjugation of the Natchez in the Natchez uprising and the so-called Natchez wars. Language
The Natchitoches were relatives of the Caddo. Few records of their language remain, but it was clearly Caddoan and likely was a dialect of the Caddo language.
Culture
Culture and heritage are vital to the Natchitoches Tribe. We honor our history, ancestors, and our future descendants by holding fast to our cultural values. Our values center around generosity of spirit, collaboration, learning, and creating a sustainable future. We follow the original instructions handed down to us from our ancestors to live in relationship with our lands, waters, plant and animal life, and like our ancestors we are committed to sustaining our human and non-human relatives.
