Description
The Nabiti are a Native American tribe from eastern Texas. The Nadaco were part of the Hasinai branch of the Caddo Confederacy, although early European explorers identified the Nabiti as enemies of the Hasinai, a testament to the shifting alliances on the South Plains. They lived in settled villages on the banks of the Angelina River. The Nabiti people were also known as the Amedice, Nabiri, Namidish, Naodice, Naondice, and Nawidish.
Language
Their name means "Cedar Place" in the Caddo language.
Culture
Their village composed of oval to circular shaped houses that were probably covered with mats or grass thatch like later Hasinai dwellings. The temple and interment mounds and the lack of them elsewhere indicate that this was a politico-religious ceremonial center that was accompanied by a hierarchy within the social system. These people planned such centers, directed construction, utilized them, and then were given elaborate burials. They had a culture that consisted of the hunting and gathering. The men hunted year round, while the young and healthy women were responsible for the gathering of fruits, seeds, and vegetables for the tribe. Acorns and roots were gathered and processed to provide food other than meat in the cold seasons when crops did not grow.
